UPSC Full form , What is Full form of UPSC?

Full form of UPSC is Union Public Service Commission. Candidate clearing UPSC can opt for IPS, IAS, IRS and IFS civil services. This is a central agency given a responsibility to conduct exams and recruit deserving candidates for various posts in Engineering Services, Police Forces examination, Economic Service, Defense Services, Medical Services, Civil Services, Statistical Service etc. UPSC exams are held for various posts for these services every year. Every year millions of students attempt for UPSC exams but only 180 are recruited for various posts. This exam is considered as one of the most difficult exams which need hard work and numerous hours study to clear it. The success rate of UPSC is just 1%. A student who wants to clear UPSC must give 9 to 10 hours daily for the preparations.

Nationality Criteria

For IAS, IFS and IPS services applicant must be the citizen of India and for other services candidate can be from India, Nepal, and Bhutan or can be a Tibetan refugee who is in Indian since Jan 1962 and is permanently settled in India. A candidate who has migrated from Kenya, Ethiopia, Myanmar, Malawi, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zambia, Vietnam, Uganda or Zaire but are of Indian origin and have the intention to settle down in India permanently are eligible. Candidates for other services must submit eligibility certificated issued by the government of India.  

Age limit

For students from general category minimum age a criterion is of 21 years and maximum age is 32. Some relaxation is given to SC, OBC, ST and other categories for upper age limit.

Educational Qualification Needed for UPSC

In general category Candidate appearing for UPSC exam should be graduate from any recognized university. Those who are in the final year of graduation or waiting for the final year results are also eligible for giving exams. Candidates who have technical and professional qualifications which are considered equivalent to a technical and professional degree by the government of India are eligible. Students with MBBS degree but has not completed internship are eligible for mains but after clearing the UPSC exam they have to submit a certificate issued by the university of clearing final year medical examination.

Stages of UPSC exams

There are three stages of UPSC exams. First is Preliminary Examination is taken, then main exam and after clearing both students have to clear the interview.

Number of attempts for UPSC

In the general category, the candidate can attempt 6 times and Physically Handicapped can attempt 9 times. In OBC category candidate can attempt 9 times and in SC/ST category there is no restriction for the number of attempts.

There are some important points that every candidate appearing for UPSC should note :

  • If any student gives UPSC prelims exam is considered as the first attempt.
  • After prelims exams the student will be eligible for mains for that year only.
  • If student application is cancelled or he or she disqualified this is counted as one attempt.
