CID represents the Crime Investigation Department. It is the Indian State Police intelligence and investigation wing. It is an important unit in the police organization, and the (ADGP) Additional Director General of Police heads it.
CID Full form
The CID headquarters is in Pune. It investigates the Indian Govt and DGP entrusted specific cases. The British government formed it in 1902 to maintain order and law in the country on the Police Commission recommendation. The department has its ranks of officers, and they mostly are in plain clothes. Such officers are CID officers or Detectives.

CID officer Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria to become a CID officer is the applicant must be an Indian citizen. Graduation is the minimum qualification as a must to join as a Sub Inspector in CID or as an officer from a recognized university.
Conversely, to join as a constable in CID, a 12 th pass or Higher secondary certificate is enough as a minimum qualification. However, apart from the qualification, to become a CID officer, there is a need to clear the exam held by the Union Public Service Commission. It is the Indian Civil Services examination that is held every year.
In India, there are universities offering criminology courses at graduation level, and enrolling in these courses helps in joining the CID. Furthermore, a candidate to work with CID should have sharp eyes, an excellent memory, good character judgment, ability to work alone and in a team.
Are CIDs an upper grade than the police?
A Police officer and a CID officer are the same. They both are police officers, but a CID officer performs when he has to work on a specific duty. CID officer is involved exclusively in criminal investigations when it is assigned to his department.
